A teaching sequence
Read, sort and build words with the taught long-a spellings ai, ay and a-e, then use one in a sentence.
Sort the taught long-a spellings
Sort the mixed word bank under ai, ay or a-e.
Which spelling pattern places this word under ai, ay or a-e?
Build the three model words
Build rain, play and made with teacher-supplied letter cards.
Do your letter cards make rain, play and made correctly?
Write with words from two groups
Optionally trace or air-write one taught spelling, then write a sentence using words from two groups.
Which two taught spelling groups appear in your sentence?
Read and identify the spellings
Read aloud and underline the long-a spellings.
Have you underlined the letters that represent the long-a sound?
Before you teach
Look for the thinking behind an answer, choose the support your class needs and leave room for an independent response.
What to look for
Expected groups: ai: train, rain, paint; ay: stay, day, play; a-e: same, plate, made. In “We made a train for the play”, underline a-e, ai and ay. Ask, “Where does each spelling appear?”
Give a little support
Use sound boxes and one worked example; include only graphemes already taught. Tracing and air-writing are optional.
Take the idea further
Add a suitable suffix or link two sentences using different long-a spellings.
Things to keep in mind
This is a practice set, not a named scheme sequence. Remove any spelling not yet taught.
Keep the idea. Make it yours.
Bring your topic, learning goal and class context to PLAI™, then review what you create.

Pencil Case Pal
The Year 2 sheet sorts nine words under ai, ay and a-e, builds rain, play and made with teacher-supplied cards, then asks for a sentence containing words from two groups. The trace or air-write step is optional.
Board Eraser
The one-page activity links reading a word bank to constructing words and identifying long-a spellings in a sentence. The three spelling patterns remain visible as separate categories.
Page-Turner Planner
Pupils can sort before building, then read the sentence aloud and underline the target spellings. If writing the pattern is a barrier, the page explicitly allows skipping trace and using air-writing.
Chalk & Chai
The sheet practises the printed long-a examples only. Keep the teacher-supplied letter cards and taught scope in view, and check the sentence contains the requested words from two groups.
