Spanish practice: read Diego and listen for facts

Read Diego’s Spanish postcard, then listen to a separate passage about Marta and record seven facts. Two pupil pages combine reading questions, a listening fact file and personal sentence starters. The companion supplies the reading key and a newly authored Marta script for the teacher to read twice.

Look at the pet choices, then listen for Marta’s facts. The teacher reads the supplied script twice.

A teaching sequence

Pupils should find and verify facts in Diego’s postcard, identify seven details in Marta’s spoken passage and choose the matching pet picture. They should use familiar Spanish starters accurately in two suitable statements about themselves.

Read Diego and locate supporting phrases

Read the postcard and answer the multiple-choice, true-or-false and English questions. Ask pupils to point to the phrase supporting a judgement and correct any false statement from the text.

Which phrase supports or corrects this answer about Diego?

Listen twice for Marta's facts

Preview Marta’s fact-file headings without supplying her answers. Read the script once for listening, then a second time while pupils record short English notes.

Have you kept Diego's written facts separate from Marta's spoken passage?

Look at the pet choices, then listen for Marta’s facts. The teacher reads the supplied script twice.

Check facts and the selected pet

Check the seven facts and the pet picture against the spoken passage. Ask which phrase distinguished the pet’s name from its colour, or likes from dislikes.

Which spoken phrase identifies the pet's name, colour or likes?

Write and review personal starters

Complete two Spanish personal starters and review their meaning and language. Return to the passage or starter when a response transfers Diego’s facts to Marta or to the pupil.

Does the sentence describe the pupil rather than borrow either character's facts?

Before you teach

Look for the thinking behind an answer, choose the support your class needs and leave room for an independent response.

What to look for

A useful reading response gives Diego’s age as 15 and football on Saturday morning. For Marta, look for age 14, a black cat named Luna, music and football, and a dislike of homework. If a pupil writes Diego’s age in Marta’s file, ask which passage supplies that fact and revise the record.

Give a little support

Highlight one question’s key word and find its matching phrase in the postcard before answering. For listening, keep the fact-file headings visible and accept brief English notes. Revisit the relevant script sentence after the two readings where name, colour or preference has been confused.

Take the idea further

Compare a fact from Diego’s reading with a fact from Marta’s listening, naming the evidence for each. Then add another accurate personal sentence beyond the two starters. Keep these statements separate so that reading, heard detail and personal writing do not merge into an invented account.

Things to keep in mind

No audio recording is supplied. Agree pronunciation, reading pace and support with a Spanish teacher.

Reread Reminder

The two-page paper first uses Diego’s postcard for multiple choice, true/false and short responses, then switches to a teacher-read Spanish passage about Marta and a pet picture choice. The sheet states that no audio is supplied.

✏️

The Curious Pencil

The reading checks details such as age, football, Sunday lunch and favourite dish before the listening section asks pupils to record facts on the second pass. Two short statements about the pupil provide a separate production task.

🖊️

Helpful Highlighter

The page says the teacher reads the passage twice and allows short notes, which can reduce writing during listening. Keep the reading answers distinct from Marta’s spoken facts so pupils do not carry information across tasks.

🫖

Chalk & Chai

This paper tests response to a teacher-read passage, not a recording or unfamiliar audio. Confirm the complete Marta answer key and ensure the pet picture matches the supplied script before use.
