A teaching sequence
Write one short paragraph of five connected French sentences about school subjects, using a preference, a reason and suitable adjective agreement.
Build the timetable phrase without articles
For the timetable sentence, choose subject names without their word-bank articles. Write de before a consonant or d’ before a vowel, as in “J’ai des cours d’anglais et d’histoire.”
Have you used de or d' before the subject name as the frame requires?
Keep articles in the opinion phrase
For opinion sentences, keep the article with the subject, as in “J’aime les sciences parce qu’elles sont intéressantes.”
Does the article remain with the chosen school subject?
Complete five frames with reasons and agreement
Complete the five sentence frames. Add a reason and check adjective agreement with the subject phrase.
Do the adjective and elle est or elles sont fit the subject phrase?
Join five connected sentences in the writing space
Join the five sentences into one paragraph, add a connector such as mais or de plus, and copy the paragraph into the writing space.
Which mais or de plus connection helps the paragraph flow?
Read aloud and apply the language checklist
Read the paragraph aloud to a partner and use the checklist to check the timetable phrase, article use and agreement.
Have timetable form, opinion articles and singular or plural agreement been checked?
Before you teach
Look for the thinking behind an answer, choose the support your class needs and leave room for an independent response.
What to look for
Expected timetable example: “J’ai des cours d’anglais et d’histoire” uses d’ plus the subject names without their articles. Expected opinion example: “J’aime les sciences parce qu’elles sont intéressantes” keeps the article les and uses elles sont intéressantes. Follow up: ask pupils to join five completed sentences into one paragraph and point out where they used de/d’ and where they retained an article.
Give a little support
Leave the model visible, provide a choice of two adjectives and rehearse the sentence aloud before writing. Use the English gloss only as a support, then return to the French sentence.
Take the idea further
Add a contrast with mais and compare two subjects. Explain why the pupil prefers one, using a second sentence rather than repeating the same adjective.
Things to keep in mind
This scaffold supports one short paragraph of five connected sentences about school subjects, with attention to de/d’, articles and singular or plural agreement.
Keep the idea. Make it yours.

Chalk & Chai
This two-page French writing task asks pupils to produce five connected sentences about school subjects, stating a preference and a reason while using suitable adjective agreement. Its model compares music, science, history and mathematics.
Board Eraser
The model includes feminine and plural subject names and adjectives, giving pupils examples to notice before they write their own preference. The word bank supports a short connected paragraph rather than isolated translations.
Calm Table
Have pupils mark the subject noun and adjective in the model, then use the bank to build a reason of their own. Check agreement in each sentence while preserving the learner's chosen meaning.
Thoughtful Pause
The model and word bank cover selected subjects and adjective forms. Check the intended grammar level and do not infer overall French writing ability from this short scaffold.
