A little about me

I coordinate an enrichment strand alongside A Levels. It brings together an independent research project, a service commitment and a skills portfolio, giving students different kinds of work to organise and reflect on during sixth form.

The challenge is protecting time for this work when revision becomes the main pressure. I want students to be able to continue their projects and commitments rather than seeing enrichment as something that can be set aside until exams are over. Clear milestones and manageable planning can help keep the work visible alongside subject study.

I look for resources that help students define a question, organise their next steps and record what they have learned. A portfolio can support reflection, but it should describe actual work rather than promise what a university or employer will value. I want the strand to have a clear purpose in its own right and a realistic place in students’ schedules.

How I approach a lesson

  1. Make research and service tasks manageable alongside subject study.

  2. Use milestones to protect time for ongoing projects.

  3. Keep portfolio records grounded in work completed.
