A little about me

I teach Combined Science across secondary. Pupils can arrive during the year with different previous experiences of the subject, so I want the lesson to make its key ideas and vocabulary easy to identify. A clear opening gives everyone a place to begin while helping me see what needs explanation.

When pupils are new to a class or school, familiar terms and diagrams may not be familiar to them. I look for ways to make instructions explicit, check understanding without putting anyone on the spot and connect a new idea to examples the group can recognise.

I value resources that support a shared goal with enough flexibility for different starting points. A worked example, labelled diagram or short recap can help pupils join in, while follow-up questions show what they have understood. The class can work towards the same scientific idea without assuming every pupil took the same route to get there.

How I approach a lesson

  1. Make key ideas and vocabulary explicit.

  2. Use examples and diagrams to support different starting points.

  3. Check understanding with low-pressure follow-up questions.
