Year 6 teacher, assessment and transition lead

I target Year 6 retrieval at the class’s current gaps and prepare transition communication for families considering different secondary settings, keeping the next step clear and relevant.

A little about me

I teach Year 6 and lead assessment and transition across the school. Retrieval questions are most helpful when they target something pupils are ready to revisit. I want practice to reflect what the class needs, rather than use a generic set of questions that does not connect with their learning.

Transition planning matters because pupils may move on to different secondary settings. Families need information that is clear and relevant to the choices they are considering. I want letters and conversations to explain the next step without assuming that every family is making the same decision.

I value resources that help pupils retrieve knowledge, prepare questions and understand a new routine. Assessment can show what teachers should revisit, but it should not define the pupil. A well-planned transition gives each child a way to carry useful knowledge and questions into the next stage.

How I approach a lesson

  1. Use retrieval questions that address current learning gaps.

  2. Explain transition information for the family’s context.

  3. Treat assessment as a prompt for teaching, not a label.
