A teaching sequence
Read and spell the printed sh words by looking closely at the spelling, recalling it after covering, writing it and checking the result.
Say the picture word, then listen for sh. Keep the sound focus with the pictured word.

After covering the model, which part of your written word needs checking?
Write the tricky words and lines
Use the page 2 tricky-word boxes for the and to, then read each short line and tick it when read.
Can you read the words you wrote in the short line?
Draw a line's meaning
Choose one line to draw, supporting a link between the written words and their meaning.
Which detail in your picture shows the meaning of the chosen line?
Agree the next home practice
An adult can add words on page 3 for a future practice session. Record the practice day using the printed weekday boxes and keep the word list with the book for next time.
Which words has the adult selected from the school's taught sequence?
Before you teach
Look for the thinking behind an answer, choose the support your class needs and leave room for an independent response.
What to look for
Look for the pupil to recall the spelling after the word is covered, then compare their written form with the model. Ask, “Which letters make the sh sound?” If the pupil copies without recalling, cover the word again and practise one example at a time.
Give a little support
Practise two words at a time and say each word clearly before covering it. Let the adult provide a verbal prompt or model one letter at a time, then give the pupil time to write independently before checking.
Take the idea further
Ask the pupil to choose one practiced word and use it in a spoken or written sentence. An adult can add a new word with the same spelling pattern only when it has been introduced in the school's teaching sequence.
Things to keep in mind
This is home-practice material, not a complete phonics programme. An adult chooses and writes the next set of words in the blank rows. Coordinate the choice with the pupil's current school teaching and avoid presenting practice ticks as a reading assessment.

Step by Step
The three-page home sheet practises six sh words through look, say, cover, write and check, then adds “the” and “to”, short sentences and a next-week word page for an adult to fill in.
Planning List
For ages 5 to 7, the routine links spelling recall to reading lines such as “a fish in a dish”. The adult can write the following week’s words, making the home practice dependent on the current teaching sequence.
Little Lightbulbs
The repeated cover-and-recall steps give the pupil a way to check a spelling rather than copy it several times without looking. A pupil can draw one chosen line after reading it.
The Curious Pencil
The sheet covers the listed sh words and two tricky words, not all spelling patterns. An adult should use the words currently taught and avoid treating a home-practice record as independent classroom assessment.
