Spanish practice: read, write and self-assess

Practise Spanish reading, gap-fill and translation with Lucía’s message and a teacher-provided mark scheme. Four sections cover comprehension, one-word answers, translation both ways and a review of strengths and next steps; short reading answers may be in English.

Me llamo Lucía y tengo catorce años. Vivo en Valencia, en un piso pequeño, con mi
madre y mi hermano. Mi hermano se llama Pablo y tiene diez años. Los sábados
me levanto tarde y voy a la playa con mis amigas. Me gusta nadar, pero no me
gusta el frío. Por la tarde, hago los deberes y veo la televisión.

MY NEXT STEP
What will you practise before the next paper?

A teaching sequence

Find details in a short Spanish text, select suitable forms and translate familiar sentences accurately.

Read Lucía and answer through the text

Read Lucía’s message and answer the five questions in English. Return to the passage to find details rather than relying on guesses.

Which phrase supports this detail in your English answer?

Choose gap words by subject and meaning

Fill each gap with one word from the word bank. Check the subject of each sentence and the verb form, and use each needed word in the right place.

Does the selected verb form agree with this sentence's subject?

Translate and check intended meaning

Translate four English sentences into Spanish and two Spanish sentences into natural English. Check meaning, verb endings, word order and accents against the taught forms.

Have you reviewed endings, word order and accents as well as natural English?

Use the teacher's guide and reflect

Mark all four parts using the teacher's checked guide. Tick the strategies used and choose a strength and next step from an identifiable language point.

Which language point supports the strength or next practice step you record?

Before you teach

Look for the thinking behind an answer, choose the support your class needs and leave room for an independent response.

What to look for

Use the teacher’s mark scheme for the total and any accepted alternatives. Check that reading answers match information in the text, each gap fits its whole sentence, and translations preserve meaning. Review Spanish accents and verb endings, but do not mark a translation as wrong only because it differs from a model wording when the meaning is accurate.

Give a little support

Before starting, review the word bank and the verbs tener, vivir, ir, gustar and ser. Let pupils annotate the reading passage, use a vocabulary list if appropriate, or complete one section at a time. Provide the teacher’s marking guidance before pupils assess translations.

Take the idea further

Ask pupils to adapt Lucía’s message with accurate details of their own choosing, then write two new comprehension questions that require a precise answer. They can create an additional gap-fill sentence using a different subject pronoun.

Things to keep in mind

This short practice samples familiar personal topics and a small set of structures. It is not a complete examination paper and does not include a scoring guide for accepting translation alternatives. Adjust timing and mark interpretation for the group.

Keep the idea. Make it yours.

Tea Break Notes

The 25-mark Spanish practice paper allocates marks across reading, gap fill and translation, with about 30 minutes and a separate self-marking step. Lucía’s message supplies the details for the first five comprehension questions.

🎨

Glue Stick Club

The French paper moves from reading in English to choosing verb forms and translating familiar sentences. The instruction to check accents makes written accuracy part of the translation task.

🔖

Reread Reminder

The question set can be completed independently before pupils compare marks and set a next step. Keep the word bank visible for the gap-fill section and separate feedback on comprehension from verb-form choices.
