A teaching sequence

Match six English classroom action words to their meanings and use at least three in a complete sentence.

Match and complete action words

Match ask, answer, compare, choose, discuss and explain with their meanings. Complete the short classroom sentences using the word bank.

Does the chosen verb fit both the meaning and the classroom sentence?

Make a current lesson example

Choose one word and describe a time you could use it in a lesson.

When could you use this action word in today's task?

Explain its purpose

Tell a partner why your chosen word helps the task move forward.

How does the word help your partner understand what to do?

Before you teach

Look for the thinking behind an answer, choose the support your class needs and leave room for an independent response.

What to look for

Expected matches: ask to a question for information; answer to a reply; compare to what is the same or different; choose to pick an option; discuss to share ideas; explain to give a reason or detail. The sentence answers are ask, answer, compare, choose, discuss, explain. Follow up: ask pupils to use one word for a familiar classroom task, for example “I explain my choice because it matches the picture.”

Give a little support

Act out each verb or pair it with an example question. Cover all but two definitions at a time and invite pupils to choose between those two.

Take the idea further

Ask pupils to combine two action words in a sequence: “I compare the answers, then explain my choice.”

Things to keep in mind

This set practises classroom instruction verbs, not subject-specific science vocabulary. Use a familiar current classroom task when pupils make their own examples.

Keep the idea. Make it yours.

Calm Table

This one-page EAL activity defines ask, answer, compare, choose, discuss and explain, then has pupils match each word to a meaning and use at least three in complete sentences.

🔔

Gentle Reminder

The definitions distinguish actions that can be confused, such as comparing for similarities or differences and explaining with a reason. Sentence completion connects the word to a classroom task.

🎨

Glue Stick Club

Act out or point to an example for each verb before matching, then let pupils say a sentence before writing it. Check that the chosen sentence demonstrates the verb's meaning.

📐

Bright Margins

A correct match shows recognition of these six instruction verbs; it does not establish that a learner can use them in other classroom contexts. Check the sentence task separately.
