A teaching sequence

Recognise six Tamil letters, match them to pictured words and locate repeated letters.

Look closely at the Tamil letters and their picture words. Use the complete set to match them.

Read the complete material

Use adult-verified letters and picture words

Say each letter and its pictured word with an adult, then draw a line to connect them.

Has a fluent Tamil speaker checked the exact sound, meaning and pairing?

Find a repeated letter shape

Find the same letters in the two rows and circle them.

Which letter can you locate again in the printed rows?

Prepare the matching cards

Cut out the letter cards and picture-word cards on page 2.

Do letter cards and picture-word cards remain clear after cutting?

Play and revisit a chosen pair

Play memory or snap using the matching pairs, repeating each word if the child wants to. Have a fluent Tamil speaker verify the sound and pairing before guided classroom practice.

Which matching letter did the child spot without treating the game as wider mastery?

Before you teach

Look for the thinking behind an answer, choose the support your class needs and leave room for an independent response.

What to look for

Check that the letters and picture words match the intended Tamil sounds and vocabulary, then listen for the child recognising a repeated form. Ask: “Which letter did you spot again?” Have a fluent speaker verify the content before using it as a language-learning reference.

Give a little support

Use large-print cards, say the word slowly and let the child point before drawing a line. Keep the set to a few pairs at first; a fluent Tamil speaker should lead pronunciation support. Introduce one or two pairs at a time and give the child time to look closely at each letter. Invite pointing, matching or repeating, but do not require pronunciation before the adult has confirmed the word.

Take the idea further

Ask pupils to create another matching pair with a verified Tamil word and a clear picture. A fluent speaker can check the letter, word and pronunciation before the card is added. After a fluent speaker checks the set, compare two letters that look similar and ask what visual feature helps distinguish them. Add a new picture only when its Tamil label is verified.

Things to keep in mind

The Tamil letter and word set should be checked by a fluent speaker before it is used as a language reference. Children can explore shapes and pictures, but an adult should confirm pronunciations and meanings.

Keep the idea. Make it yours.

📒

Chalk Dust & Checklists

The cards pair six Tamil letters (அ, ஆ, இ, ஊ, எ and ஏ) with pictured words, then ask the child to find repeated letters and play memory or snap. The adult is asked to say each word before matching.

🔍

Clear Example

For ages 4 to 6, the two-page set moves from letter recognition to a cut-out matching game. Separating the picture-and-letter task from the card backs creates a simple route from guided naming to repeated practice.

🎒

Pocketful of Stories

An adult can say the word, invite the child to repeat or point, then draw a match line. The memory game reuses the same six forms, giving practice without adding a longer written task.

📐

Bright Margins

Pronunciation and picture-word matches should be checked with a fluent Tamil educator before use. The cards cover six letters only and should not be presented as a complete Tamil alphabet or reading sequence.
