Year 4 class teacher

I plan Year 4 English, mathematics, science and inquiry around pupils’ different prior curricula, using clear purposes, examples and language so they can compare approaches and explain their thinking.

A little about me

I teach Year 4 across English, mathematics, science and inquiry. Pupils may have encountered these subjects through different prior curricula, so I want to understand their starting points before deciding that one explanation will work for everyone. A shared lesson can still make room for more than one route into the idea.

I look for the knowledge pupils bring and use it to decide what needs to be modelled, discussed or revisited. Differences in experience do not mean pupils cannot work together; they mean the teacher needs to make the purpose and language of the task clear. A well-chosen example can help the class compare approaches without assuming that one is automatically familiar.

I value resources that are easy to adapt across a mixed group. A concise prompt or visual can establish a common question, while flexible support helps pupils take the next step from where they are. I want to keep expectations clear and give pupils a chance to explain how they arrived at an answer or interpretation.

How I approach a lesson

  1. Check prior knowledge before choosing a model.

  2. Make the task purpose and language explicit.

  3. Use flexible support while keeping a shared question.
