Key Stage 1 teaching assistant and emotional literacy support assistant

Sylvia Nkemelu

I adapt emotional-literacy activities to each referral’s purpose and share clear handovers across Key Stage 1 classrooms, helping colleagues know what was tried and what needs follow-up.

A little about me

I work as a shared teaching assistant across Key Stage 1 and run emotional-literacy support sessions. Each session needs to connect with the pupil’s particular referral and the purpose of the support. A generic worksheet may be easy to prepare, but it can miss what the pupil is practising or what the adult should notice.

When I move between classrooms, a clear handover helps me keep the work connected. I want colleagues to know what was planned, which activity was used and what should be followed up, while keeping sensitive information within the appropriate professional record.

I look for resources that can be adapted to an individual goal and used in a manageable way. A prompt or activity should help the pupil explore a feeling or strategy without assuming the same response from everyone. I value coordination that lets the child experience consistent support even when the adults and rooms change.

How I approach a lesson

  1. Plan emotional-literacy work around the individual support goal.

  2. Use activities that invite reflection without assuming a response.

  3. Leave concise handovers between classrooms.
