A task breakdown should make the next action easier to see without deciding or completing it for the learner. A check-in can show whether the pupil knows where to begin; the prompt can then be adjusted to the subject work in front of us. The same wording will not fit a reading task, a practical activity and a longer piece of work.
The aim is to support access and growing independence together. I want to give enough structure for a learner to take part, while protecting their opportunity to think and act for themselves. That balance is more useful than adding support that makes the adult responsible for each step.
Tailor task cues to the activity and learner rather than using a blanket sheet.
