Teaching Assistant, Year 8

Reece Fairclough

I support newly arrived Year 8 EAL pupils through lesson-specific task breakdowns and check-ins, clarifying the first action and checking understanding before giving them room to continue.

A little about me

I support Year 8 pupils developing English across lessons, with particular attention to students who have recently arrived. The subject changes through the day, so language support needs to meet pupils inside the work they are asked to do.

A task breakdown can make a first action visible; a check-in can show whether the instructions have made sense. I want those supports to reflect the lesson rather than give every student the same sheet regardless of subject or starting point. The induction programme provides a route into school, while classroom prompts need to connect with the current learning.

My role is to help students take part in the task, not to replace it with separate work. Clear directions and a moment to check understanding can help me see what support is useful, then give the pupil room to continue.

How I approach a lesson

  1. Tie English-language support to the subject task pupils are doing.

  2. Break down instructions and check that the starting point is understood.

  3. Use induction as context while adapting prompts to each classroom lesson.
