I use roles, movement, voice and short improvisation to give quieter pupils a way into Drama, with supported participation and room to build on one another’s ideas.

A little about me

I teach Drama from Year 7 to IGCSE. I want pupils who are quieter in other lessons to have a way into performance and discussion. Drama can begin before a response is polished, giving pupils a chance to try an idea and build on what someone else offers.

Confidence does not have to be the entry ticket. I look for activities where pupils can take different roles and contribute through movement, voice or a short improvisation. A teacher can structure the work so that participation is supported while the group still has room to make choices.

I value resources that invite exploration rather than prescribe a perfect performance. A scene, prompt or role can give pupils something to respond to, while reflection helps them notice what changed in the work. I want Drama to make space for voices that might not be heard as readily in another subject.

How I approach a lesson

  1. Offer more than one way to enter a performance task.

  2. Use improvisation to make room for emerging ideas.

  3. Reflect on choices without requiring a polished first response.
