Learning Support Assistant, Year 9

Michaela Rourke

I shape Year 9 support around the current activity, using clear actions and check-ins that help pupils see the next step while keeping their opportunity to act independently.

A little about me

My Year 9 named-plan support is centred on the activity in front of the learner. A useful prompt needs to fit that task, rather than arrive as a generic set of adjustments.

I look for ways to make the next step visible without doing the work for a pupil. Breaking an activity into clear actions can help me check where support is needed, then give the learner room to continue. The prompt should change when the task changes; a fixed sheet cannot anticipate every subject or moment.

Learner agency matters in this work. Support should make participation possible and leave the pupil with a meaningful part to play. I want check-ins to clarify what comes next, not turn the adult into the person carrying the whole task.

How I approach a lesson

  1. Tie task steps to the activity the learner is doing now.

  2. Use a check-in to clarify the next action, then leave space to try it.

  3. Keep support specific while preserving the learner’s role in the work.
