Year 4 homeroom teacher

I plan adaptation before the lesson, choosing accessible texts, vocabulary support and preparation time so pupils with different starting points can join the same Year 4 conversation.

A little about me

I teach a Year 4 class with a wide range of starting points. I plan the adaptation before the lesson because it changes what the lesson needs to do: which text will be accessible, what support will help and how pupils can take part in the same conversation.

When a class includes different reading experiences and home languages, there is no single scaffold that works for everyone. I look for more than one route into the material while keeping a common question for the group. Pupils may need different prompts, vocabulary support or time to prepare, but those supports should help them contribute to the shared learning.

I value resources that are flexible enough for teachers to adjust without losing the main purpose. A task should make it possible to see what pupils understand and where they need another example. I want to design for variation from the beginning, so adaptation is part of the teaching rather than an extra step added after the lesson is planned.

How I approach a lesson

  1. Plan access and adaptation before the lesson.

  2. Keep a shared question with varied routes into it.

  3. Use responses to decide what support or example comes next.
