Head of Year 7
I work with Year 7 tutors on concise settling-in summaries that identify useful follow-up conversations, leaving room to learn directly from pupils after their first weeks in secondary school.
Explore the collectionThe move into Year 7 brings a large group of new pupils into a different setting. I lead the year with the tutor team and work alongside the Key Stage 3 transition lead, so I think about what tutors need to know after the first weeks.
A settling-in summary should give each tutor group a useful picture, not turn pupils into a list of concerns. I want it to identify who may need a follow-up conversation and leave the tutor room to learn more directly from the pupil. The timing matters: after the first half term, there is enough experience to notice questions worth pursuing.
Transition work is shared across tutors. A concise summary can help them decide where to spend time, while the conversation itself remains personal and open. I value information that supports a next step without claiming to explain everything about a new pupil.
Prepare a tutor-group view after the first half term, when early patterns can be considered.
Use a summary to prompt a conversation, not to label a new pupil.
Keep the tutor team involved in Year 7 transition and follow-up.
