Higher level teaching assistant, early years and Key Stage 1
A sound can be noticed in a story, a sign or a conversation outside, then revisited in a short group activity.
Explore the collectionI support phonics and provision across Reception and Key Stage 1. Outdoor learning gives pupils room to move, explore materials and take part in a different way. I look for moments when a child becomes more engaged and consider how the experience might connect with what we are teaching.
Phonics practice still needs a clear focus. A sound can be noticed in a story, a sign or a conversation outside, then revisited in a short group activity. That keeps the practice connected to the wider day and helps adults see how pupils use what they have learned.
I value resources that work both indoors and outdoors and can be adapted for different ages. A simple prompt or collection of materials can help the adult join in without taking over the play. I want children to have a practical way to participate, with staff sharing observations and continuing the learning back in class.
