A little about me

I teach Art and Design across the primary phase as a specialist. Moving between year groups gives me a view of how pupils’ experiences build over time, while each class still brings its own interests and starting points. I want the subject to have a clear place in the timetable and in the way pupils talk about their work.

Art and design learning needs space for making as well as reflection. I look for activities that help pupils explore a choice, work with materials and explain what they have tried. A finished piece is only one part of the process; the questions, revisions and decisions along the way can also give pupils something meaningful to discuss.

I value resources that are clear enough to use and open enough to adapt. A prompt can help begin a practical task, but it should not prescribe one outcome for every pupil. I want a structure that supports purposeful making, gives pupils a reason to look again at their choices and leaves room for teachers to respond to the work they see.

How I approach a lesson

  1. Make space for practical exploration and reflection.

  2. Ask pupils to describe decisions made during the process.

  3. Use prompts that allow varied outcomes.
