A little about me

I support English as an Additional Language in Key Stage 1. Pupils arrive with different language experiences, so I look for visual support and dual-language materials where they are available. These can make an instruction or new concept easier to understand while a pupil is becoming familiar with English.

New arrivals may need time to listen before speaking. I want families to understand that silence in a new language does not tell us everything a child knows. A plain explanation and a chance to ask questions can help adults share what they are seeing without drawing a quick conclusion.

I value resources that can be adapted to the languages and learning context of the pupils in front of us. A picture, key word or translated text can support participation, but the teacher still needs to check accuracy and purpose. I want language support to help pupils access the same classroom learning and show what they understand.

How I approach a lesson

  1. Pair key language with visual support.

  2. Use dual-language materials where they are available and checked.

  3. Allow time to listen and respond to families’ questions.
