I look for plans that show how a pupil can access the same important learning in a way that is appropriate to their current language development.
Explore the collectionI lead English as an Additional Language across the school. Language development belongs in every subject lesson, not only in a separate support service. I want teachers to notice how much language a task requires and to plan a route that helps pupils engage with that demand.
Different pupils need different kinds of support. Some may benefit from focused language teaching, while others need in-class help where the language load is especially high. The route can change without making the subject itself less meaningful or asking pupils to do less thinking.
I look for plans that show how a pupil can access the same important learning in a way that is appropriate to their current language development. Resources can make vocabulary, instructions and response options clearer, but they need to remain connected to the subject goal. I value collaboration across departments so language access is considered before a lesson begins, not added only when difficulty appears.
