A teaching sequence
Read, sort and build words with the taught graphemes sh and ch, then write and read them in a sentence.
Sort sh and ch words
Sort the mixed word bank under sh or ch.
Which letters represent the taught sound in this word?
Build and sound out
Build ship, chop and lunch with teacher-supplied letter cards, saying each sound.
Can you say each sound as you build lunch with the letter cards?
Complete each sentence
Choose sh or ch to complete each sentence.
Which taught digraph makes a word that fits the sentence?
Write and read a sentence
Optionally trace one taught digraph or word, then write and read a sentence with one sh and one ch word.
Can you underline one sh word and one ch word in your own sentence?
Before you teach
Look for the thinking behind an answer, choose the support your class needs and leave room for an independent response.
What to look for
Expected sort: sh: dish, shop, shell, ship; ch: chin, much, chop, lunch. The gaps are ship, chair and shell. Ask, “Which two letters work together for the first sound?”
Give a little support
The teacher supplies letter cards. Model one digraph, use sound boxes, and offer tracing or air-writing as an optional route.
Take the idea further
Add a suitable suffix or write a sentence containing both a sh word and a ch word.
Things to keep in mind
Use only after the class has been taught these correspondences. This practice set does not claim to match a named scheme.
Keep the idea. Make it yours.

Coffee Before Copies
The Year 2 task sorts eight words under sh or ch, builds ship, chop and lunch, then chooses spellings for three sentence gaps and writes a sentence containing one word from each group.
Kind Check-In
This one-page resource combines sorting, sound-by-sound construction and sentence use. The optional line permits tracing or air-writing, so pupils can focus on reading and distinguishing the digraphs.
One More Question
Say each sound while building a word with the teacher-supplied cards, then return to the mixed bank for the sentence. Underlining both digraphs makes the final check visible.
Book and Biscuit
The word bank is a selected practice set, not a complete list of sh and ch words. Check the constructed spelling and sentence choice, and preserve the optional trace/air-write route.
